Bridges with Maths
After an initial discussion about various types of bridges and the Civil Engineers who are involved in designing and building them, pupils are set the task of testing the materials to be used for making their bridge; in this case paper art straws. The test is carried out by measuring and recording the weight that a given number of straws can support over a span of 10cm. The pupils work in teams of four or five and they record their results on a bar chart. The bar chart is used to plan how many straws will be needed to build a bridge with a greater span which can support a given weight. Their interpolation is then built and tested.
